At this turning point in global development, humanity must react urgently and has only two possible choices for its future. For its future: ‘decay or a salutary awakening’. The ‘choices we make - or fail to make today will be decisive: either we sink into decay and face repeated crises face repeated crises in the future, or we can pull ourselves together to create the conditions for a better, more sustainable and peaceful future for the people of Europe.

More sustainable and peaceful future for our people and our planet. This is an existential decision: continue on an unsustainable path or radically change course. Knowledge is essential if we are to direction and move towards a fairer, more sustainable future. It is what gives meaning to the world that surrounds us, shapes our ideas and guides our actions. Yet the dominant models of production, validation, dissemination and, ultimately, use of knowledge no longer provide an effective response to the multi-dimensional crises we face. An effective response to the multidimensional and intersecting crises we face today.

Radically changing course to build fairer, more sustainable futures requires us to change the way we produce and use knowledge. Production and use of knowledge. We also need to reformulate the public dimension of knowledge and innovation. Public dimension of knowledge and innovation, particularly insofar as it has implications for education and education and skills development systems in Africa. This is also what is envisaged in Agenda 2063, Africa's blueprint and master plan for its development and transformation into a global power of the future. Power of the future, with the vision of an ‘integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, led by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force on the continent. A dynamic force on the world stage’.
